If you happen to follow me on my Instagram then you already know my passion borderline obsession with blood oranges. Everything about this citrus fruit is amazing! The benefits, the taste, the beautiful color on the inside of the fruit, it’s absolutely astounding to me. Ok, I may be a little obsessed lol!
Blood orange insanity!
It was only right that I make a delicious drink incorporating this lovely citrus fruit. Typically blood oranges are in season, I’ve seen them in my local grocery for the past month and they have been so delicious! If blood oranges are not in season where you are, feel free to substitute navel oranges and grapefruit to give it that same blood orange flavor. But if you should be so lucky to have them in your local store, buy them all!
If I could describe the taste of a blood orange it would be a cross between a grapefruit and navel orange. You get tanginess, with a subtle lovely sweetness that just sends the taste buds into citrus bliss! Yeah, I’m a weirdo about this fruit don’t judge me.
I assure you that you will love it too if citrus fruit is your jam, but either way lets get into the making of this lovely drink. A few tools you’ll need to get this drink into motion are;
- small saucepan
- glass pitcher
Ingredients you’ll need are;
- Blood oranges
Now, if you don’t have a juicer you can use a hand held citrus squeezer. You will work a little harder and you won’t get that bright red color, but the taste will still be equally delicious. I’m a big aesthetic person, I love making things pretty! with flavor always being first.
For this recipe we will be making a simple syrup, simple syrup is often used in mixed cocktails, but can be used into any drink. The name says it all, simple syrup. You start by adding equal parts water with sugar and boil it down into the sugar is dissolved see simple! And this recipe will make a lot, so you can store it into a glass jar and keep it on hand for future delicious drinks. I also added lemons into the mix to give it a bright and clean burst of citrus flavor this is a citrus lover’s paradise!

Refreshing Blood Orange DrinkCourse: DrinksCuisine: AmericanDifficulty: Easy
6 blood oranges cut in halves
6 lemons cut in halves
2 cup of water (for simple syrup)
2 cup of sugar (for simple syrup)
6 cups of water maybe more
- Using an electric juicer or hand held juicer, juice oranges and lemons until all are juiced, no need to cut the skins off if using an electric juicer. Set aside.
- In a small sauce pan add 2 cups of sugar and 2 cups of water into the pot and boil until all sugar is dissolved, allow the simple syrup to cool and store into a glass jar. ( you can store this in the fridge for up to 4 weeks.)
- In a large pitcher, add juiced oranges and lemons add 6 cups of water and stir. Add more water if you need to.
- To sweeten, add simple syrup to your desired sweetness.
- If using a handheld juicer, follow all the same steps. Simple syrup can be stored away in the fridge for 4 weeks.
